Mahabodhi Temple
Mahabodhi Temple was built by King Zeya-Theinkha (Nadaung-Myar) in 1215 A.D. It is a double storeyed structure rising 140 feet above the ground level. It consists of a staircase built in the south wall. King Nadaung-Myar built after the model of Mahabodhi Temple at Bodhgaya in Bihar. Like Bodhgaya temple one Buddha image was placed in the lower storey as well as another Buddha image in upper storey. It is distinctive in that 465 Buddha images in different postures were placed in the niches of the whole surface of the spire. There are seven monument altogether as the seven places (Satta Htana) of Buddha. The floor levels are eight feet different between Maha Bodhi and Ratana-Gara (Gen House) because Ratana-Gara was probably built about two hundred years earlier than Maha Bodhi. The reredos with glazed decorations in various colours inside the Ratana-Gara is the only one in Bagan, but it was destroyed by the earthquake in 1975 the lower and some pieces are displayed in the archaeological museum. 13 lines of ink inscription recorded about the donation of land can be studied on the east interior wall of the upper storey. Beautiful stucco figures such as the various birds and nats can also be seen on the exterior walls.
